GO AHEAD, TAP THAT CLASS

If you are a follower of BEING BOUJEE, you know we care about looking good, but more importantly, FEELING good. I FEEL better when I am at a healthy weight. Unfortunately, my weight has been a yo-yo experience over the years. I like to blame the heaviest years on the significant losses I had experienced in life in the passing of my brother and my dad, but that was entirely unfair to them. I was the one who chose to eat my feelings during those dark times, and at my heaviest, I was 210 lbs.

On the right is me on a girl’s trip to Seattle in October 2022. This was me at my heaviest of 210 lbs. On the left is me in the Dominican Republic in June 2023, weighing around 150 lbs. I didn’t realize how overweight I was until I saw this side-by-side. I know many people in the world are heavier than I was, but I was so uncomfortable in my skin at this time. I was so unhappy but just trying to fake my way through life.

A year ago, a close girlfriend shared with me that she was starting a shot to help her lose weight, hopefully. I have tried a lot of things over the years to lose weight (Sono Bello, random pills, diets, you name it!), so I was willing to try anything. The one thing that gave me pause about this option was giving myself a shot every week. YIKES! It sounds awful, but I promise it isn’t as bad as it sounds.

After researching, I decided to utilize PUSH Health to get a prescription for Mounjaro. What is Mounjaro? Mounjaro is an injectable prescription medicine to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with Type 2 diabetes. It is not currently FDA-approved for weight loss, which I used for, but the good news is that the approval is coming!

Push Health is a telehealth option where you can message a doctor in your state. It costs $75 for an “appointment,” but I just message back and forth with my APRN. I have never spoken to her over the phone or via video; she is THE BEST! She has supported my use of Mounjaro for weight loss and has been impressed with my loss (60 lbs).

You will start at 2.5 mg weekly if you can get a prescription. It would be best if you gave the shot at the same time each week. Will you have some side effects? Probably. I remember being extremely tired the first few days when I first started. I also had a headache, but it went away after a few days, and I don’t have any side effects now. (UPDATE: I have had eyesight issues. I used to have readers that weren’t necessary to wear to read, but they helped. Now, they are essential. I have read that the shot can impact your sight, which is one side effect I have noticed.)

The shot will assist with quieting the hunger voices you hear in your head, which will lessen how much you eat. I still eat crap. I eat greasy, deep-fried foods with zero nutritional value. I don’t eat veggies or salads. I don’t work out. I haven’t changed anything except the shot every week and lost 60 lbs in 7 months.

Once the hunger voices start entering your head again, your doctor will increase your dosage in increments of 2.5 mg. So begin on 2.5 mg, then move to 5.0, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and max out at 15.0. How quickly you move through the different dosages truly depends on the individual. I stayed on several dosages for two months, and others I moved on from after the four dosages. You must listen to your body and the food noises in your head to know what to do next. Your doctor will significantly help, so be honest and direct with them.

I will be honest and state that in 2022, it was much easier to get Mounjaro prescribed. Now, it seems a little trickier for some and even more challenging to get insurance to cover it. Last year, a coupon kept the price down to $25 a month. Without insurance, it usually costs between $1,000 and $1,500 a month. I know. That sounds ridiculous! However, I have spent a lot more on exercise machines, pills, surgeries, etc. I was blessed to use the coupon for much of my time on it. I have been paying out of pocket for it because my insurance doesn’t cover it; however, once I reach my out-of-pocket max ($3,000), it will be covered by my insurance. Yes, it is a lot of money. But I am willing to invest in my health, and I feel so much better in various ways because of the weight loss.

RECOMMENDATION: If you are considering trying something drastic, like Mounjaro or cosmetic surgery, I HIGHLY suggest utilizing a digital scale to assist in keeping track of your weight loss. We love this RENPHO scale because it works great with the RENPHO digital tape measure. This is what the graph looks like to track your weight. It is straightforward to connect and use, so it is a MUST if you are serious about monitoring your weight and inches.

There are a few options for prescription weight loss, so I suggest conversing with your doctor to determine what is best for you and what your insurance covers. I am happy to answer any questions about my journey on Mounjaro. Please send us a message on Instagram or Facebook or comment below! Best of luck in your weight loss journey! Do it not because you want to look better but because you want to FEEL better. You deserve it.
