Estes Park, Colorado, is about an hour and 20 minutes from Denver and is considered the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.
Estes Park is a great spot to stock up on supplies before entering Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). We would suggest water and snacks if you are doing any activity while in RMNP . . . and, of course, gas for your vehicle!
One way to see the area’s beauty is by exploring via an ATV. We decided to make a day of it and rented a side-by-side ATV from Estes Park ATV Rentals. What makes Estes Park ATV rentals so unique is that you rent the side-by-side, a trailer, and a truck to tow it to your destination.
We decided to trailer the side-by-side Razor to Switzerland Trail, about 45 minutes from Estes Park.
Once you arrive at the trailhead, there is a parking lot where you unload the Razor. CAUTION: Make sure you park in a manner that will assist you in getting out more manageable when you are ready to leave. We got stuck between trucks and trailers, so we had to detach the trailer, hand move it a few rows over, and then reattach it to the truck before loading the Razor for the drive back to Estes Park.
The views from the trails were jaw-dropping and beautiful! Every turn you made had an even more remarkable view than the last.
TIP #1: Pack a lunch and stop along the trail to enjoy a picnic. We stopped at Subway in Estes Park to grab sandwiches to take on the trail for our lunch.
TIP #2: Bring a chair, an inflatable couch, or a blanket to utilize when you want a break from the Razor. We brought inflatable couches and used them in a quiet area with a fantastic mountain view while we took a nap. Yes, we took a break from the trails to take a short nap.
TIP #3: If you get motion sickness or think you might, I suggest taking something like Dramamine. (Hence, a nap was needed at one point.) If your body isn’t adjusted to the altitude, you may also experience a little altitude sickness.
The Razor rentals from Estes Park ATV Rentals include a built-in GPS, which comes in super handy as cell phone reception could be better. Another bonus is a connection to your phone so you can listen to tunes while you drive the trails.
If you are not used to driving on trails, consider yourself warned that you will get dirty – especially if you intentionally hit the water puddles like we did! We suggest packing additional clean clothes to put on when you are done ATVing. Also I would recommend a garbage bag to put your dirty clothes in.
The weather in town is very different than in the mountains, so we suggest dressing in layers. That is true of any place you visit in Colorado. Layer up!
Helmets are provided by Estes Park ATV Rentals, as is a safety video before leaving with the Razor, truck, and trailer.
We rented the Razor for the entire day, which we would highly suggest! It was so much fun! I can’t wait to do it again in a different part of Colorado.
