I love TSA PreCheck. It’s incredible and makes travel so much smoother, but there is one step before TSA PreCheck that you should be aware of if you are a frequent traveler. CLEAR!
What is CLEAR? CLEAR utilizes Biometrics such as your eyes, face, and fingerprints to confirm your identity. You don’t have to fumble to show your driver’s license to the TSA agent. You still need to show your ID when checking bags at the airline counter, but then you can put it away and never reach for it again.
I signed up for CLEAR at an airport a few years ago when I saw a long TSA line. I had read about CLEAR via my credit card, which offered reimbursement for your CLEAR membership as a benefit of the credit card.
How does the CLEAR process work? First, you will check your usual bag for the airline you are flying. I am an overpacker, so I often have a checked bag. I know. I know. Lighten the load! You will show your driver’s license or state ID to the attendant at the airline counter where you receive your paper board passes (does anyone still use paper boarding passes?) and luggage tags. After showing your driver’s license, you will put it away and proceed to the dedicated CLEAR line.
Once you arrive at the CLEAR line, you will approach a machine with the option to confirm your identity by eyes, face, or fingerprints. For some reason, the employee usually selects eyes, which are checked. I look into a specific area for the eyes (the machine will tell you to get either closer or further away). Once the picture is taken, it pulls up my profile for the employee to verify. The employee then looked at my boarding pass and the name on my account and escorted me to the front of the line to the TSA agent.
If you have TSA PreCheck, they lead you directly to the front of the TSA PreCheck line. If you don’t have TSA PreCheck, they will lead you to the front of the general security line. That’s it! The CLEAR employee verified my identity with the TSA agent, and I quickly flashed my boarding pass to the TSA agent. The TSA agent then grants me access to the security screening process. DONE! Stop the timer! On average, it takes just a few minutes to get through the security line before entering the security screening process.
In another post, I will compare TSA PreCheck and CLEAR, but for the moment, I will phrase it like this: CLEAR gets you to the front of the line the quickest, and TSA PreCheck gets you through the security screening process fast.
