GO AHEAD, TAP THAT CLASS

Just to let you know, the Peloton community has not brainwashed me, and I am not a COVID purchaser of the bike. I purchased the Peloton maybe five years ago without test-driving it first. Yep, I am THAT kind of a risk-taker. I saw the ads on TV and thought it looked pretty great. We were building a new house then, and while we had a treadmill, adding a Peloton bike to our new home gym would complete the space. I wanted the BOUJEE look, knowing I probably wouldn’t use it much, which is partly true. I go in spurts of riding.

I ordered the bike directly from the Peloton website, as at that time, there weren’t any storefronts near us in Minnesota. Within three weeks, it was delivered and installed in our home. It didn’t look as intimidating as I thought it would, and I jumped on for a pre-recorded beginners’ class, the first cycle class I had ever taken. The best news about the experience is that I didn’t die, which made me want to ride again the next day.

What do I love about owning a Peloton Bike? I love that I can roll out of bed, throw on my padded bike shorts (an absolute must), a sports bra, and deodorant, and within minutes, I am on the bike in a cycle class with thousands of people worldwide. No make-up, no driving to the gym, no cold car, no leaving the dog home alone for more hours than needed.

In addition to the convenience, I enjoy the variety of classes offered. You can sort classes by class length, instructor, music genre, type of class, etc. In addition to cycle classes, Peloton offers yoga, meditation, strength training, dance/cardio, boot camp, running, walking, and various other classes. Something is available to fit your needs, and trying new classes is fun. A few weeks ago, I struggled through a beginner yoga class (and I haven’t taken another one since) while I excelled at a boot camp class that combined strength training off the bike and a cycle class. Almost nightly, I listen to a meditation class that helps me turn off my mind to fall asleep (and stay asleep). Like I said, there is something for everyone.

Purchasing a Peloton membership of $39/month includes a membership for the entire family, which is less expensive than an actual gym membership. As a member, everyone in your family can take classes from the bike directly, or one can download the app and take classes remotely, which is how I handle the nightly meditation classes.

Are there any cons to owning a Peloton Bike? Well, when the dog barks to go outside while I am in the middle of a class, I had wished for years that there was a pause button….and now there is one! Yahoo!!

Since the pause button has been addressed, it is challenging to think of a con. The monthly membership charges can increase over time if you don’t use it. Besides that, I can’t think of a con to owning the bike.

Advice: The first few rides will probably hurt your bum or lady parts. Don’t give up. I promise after a week, it will feel better. However, remember, each long break you take from riding will require your body to get used to riding again. You would think that would be enough encouragement for me to stick with it, but I still experience the body pain rollercoaster from riding/not riding.
